Know the technical condition before you buy, repair or invest.

A listing and the vessel’s actual condition don’t always match. We inspect independently and report the findings, the limits of the inspection and what still needs checking, before you decide.

The report is written for your decision.

What you receive

  • An independent report explaining the findings in relation to your decision
  • Inspection limitations and items needing further checks
  • Questions and work items to carry into purchase, repair or maintenance discussions

Independent technical report: findings and their classes, inspection limits, recommended further checks

Authority note

Where a statutory survey or certificate is required, the authorised surveyor, classification society or flag administration is engaged. This report is an independent technical inspection and does not replace a statutory survey or certificate.

Beyond the sales particulars

Photographs, specifications and maintenance records are a starting point. Your questions about the yacht’s present condition call for a defined inspection: what can be examined, which systems need checking and what access is available.

Findings you can use

We plan the inspection around your decision, whether that is a purchase, a repair or an investment. We review accessible areas, systems and available documents and explain what the findings mean, so you know which technical questions to take into the negotiation or the repair plan.

Damage and repair

After damage, we assess the condition and the proposed repair independently. During a repair or refit we supervise the work against the agreed scope and attend sea trials, adding our technical observations to the report. Where an insurance damage assessment is needed, it is carried out by a licensed loss adjuster.

Know what was inspected

Haul-out, sea trials and system specialist checks are included where agreed, and we state which areas could not be accessed or tested. NAUTICARES is not a flag administration, classification society or recognised organisation (RO). Where a statutory survey or certificate is required, we bring in the authorised surveyor, class society or flag administration.

Questions

On this topic in Capt. Nautis

What to ask before a pre-purchase survey
Does the survey include a sea trial?

Sea trials, haul-out and other inspection arrangements are agreed before the assignment. They should not be assumed to be part of every survey.

Does this replace a statutory survey or certificate?

No. Our independent inspection informs your decision; it does not replace a survey or certificate issued on behalf of flag or class. If one is needed, we establish the authorised party’s role at the outset and coordinate the process for you.

Can you inspect a yacht I already own?

Yes. We can agree a scope to assess its general condition, a damage case or a specific system.
