Compare the scope before you compare refit prices

Two yards quote different prices for what appears to be the same job. Before choosing, establish what each price covers: the work list, exclusions and expected handover all matter.

Separate the tasks

Group required repairs, routine maintenance and optional improvements separately. A mixed list can obscure which tasks need attention and which can be considered later.

For each item, describe the known condition and intended result. Link photographs, previous reports or technical documents to the task where available. If the solution is not yet understood, discuss the investigation needed with a specialist before specifying a repair.

Compare what is included

The same line item can cover different work: ‘antifouling’ on one quote may mean sanding, primer and two coats, on another a single coat. Ask how materials, labour, access preparation, checks and handover information are addressed. Resolve unclear items in writing before making a price decision.

  • What work and intended result does each quotation describe?
  • Which items are excluded?
  • Is input from another specialist or contractor needed?
  • How will the work be checked and handed over?

Agree change approvals

Additional needs may emerge during a refit. Before work begins, establish who will propose a change, who will assess the technical question and who can approve it.

Record additional work separately from the original scope. Discuss its effect on cost, sequencing and intended dates. That allows the original quotation and later additions to be reviewed separately.

Review progress

Contractors working in different parts of the yacht may depend on each other’s tasks. Discuss sequencing, access and pending decisions with the yard and team.

Progress information should distinguish completed work, work under way and unanswered questions. Photographs are more useful for later review when it is clear which task they show.

Plan for handover

Handover involves more than reaching a date. Discuss the checks, trials, commissioning and documentation relevant to the scope at the beginning. Their applicability depends on the work, so seek the appropriate specialist’s input.

Review the final position against completed and open items. Identify where operating or maintenance information is still needed and who will follow it up.
